The warm scent of fresh bread was quickly filling your small shop. Even with the early hours, you loved being a baker. Your parents had been bakers and you grandparents before that. The townspeople often joked that your family didn’t give birth and instead they baked a loaf of bread so perfect that it turned into a child. As a child you had never doubted you future as a baker, and even now as you stood in the bakery’s kitchen working with breads and cakes you knew that you loved baking.

However, as a child, you had met a small boy that changed something in you. He was barely older than you, but he was already a pirate. He had been irritating at first, acting aloof and a bit mean. His pirate crew had been in town to hide out from the Marines, the boy had told you they would be in town for a few days. For the first couple days he was there, you had a hard time getting him to talk to you, but finally he seemed to open up and you two had a great time running around the town causing mischief. At one point you had learned that he hated bread, and had promised to make him a loaf of bread so amazing that even he would love it.

The day he left you had raced to the docks with a small loaf of bread. It was nothing like the bread you baked these days, you remembered the almost burnt, too sweet bread that you had spent all night making for him. For someone that hated bread, you remembered crying as he ate it. You had stood there waiting for him to say something, hoping that he would praise it, even if it was a lie. He hadn’t. He had told you that it was terrible, even for bread and that if that was your best then you should never become a baker. That was still the best day of your life though. He had said that you promised him amazing bread and that he would be back when you had become a better baker.

He had awakened an adventurous spirit in you, and for years at night you had dreamt of being a pirate. You had never let you parents know of your secret desire, it wouldn’t have made a difference. You would break their hearts over something that was never going to happen. So you grew up to the life everyone expected of you. You spent your days baking and sleepless nights cooking; pretending you were the cook on a pirate ship that your first love captained. You came back to your senses in time to retrieve that mornings cinnamon rolls before they burnt.

You placed the rolls on a tray and carried them to the front of the store, finding a spot to display them. You glanced up and saw a young man that you had never seen standing outside the display window. The man was wearing a jumpsuit and wearing a strange green hat. He seemed to be drooling over the muffins you had put there earlier. Whether your shop was closed or not, you were not one to turn away a customer so you walked over and unlocked the door.

“We aren’t open right now, but if you like I could make an exception for you. Would you like to come in?” He jumped as you spoke to him, looking up at you nervously.

“I really shouldn’t, my ship has a ban on bread products. I haven’t eaten a muffin in years, I was just admiring those chocolate cherry filled ones.” He looked longingly at the muffins once again. You smiled walking in and wrapping one that was still warm, carrying it out to him.

“From one muffin lover to another, you should never go without, so we can just keep this between us.” Watching his eyes light up gave you a warm feeling, like opening the oven door after baking anything with cinnamon or cayenne powder in it. After several more apologies, the man ran off clutching the muffin to his chest. You couldn’t help but think the man had been very strange as you walked back into the bakery, and finished preparing for opening time.

After you opened up the shop, one of your regular customers had been deciding what to order as she talked to you. You stood there listening, already preparing her order as she looked. The older woman always took her time looking, but ended up purchasing the same loaf of bread everyday. As she finally ordered you gave her the bread and before she left she mentioned that apparently there had been sightings of a pirate ship that had docked on the other side of the small island.

You spent most of the morning thinking about the ship, and what kind of pirates were on it. You wondered whether the man from that morning was one of them. Before you could pass the shop off to your younger brother for the rest of the day, you saw the man from earlier outside the shop. This time there was another man with him, along with what seemed to be a walking polar bear. Living in the New World made such things as walking polar bears lose their strangeness, in fact a few weeks ago a pirate group had caused a huge commotion and they had a pet reindeer that had a blue nose and could talk of all things. That group had not only cleaned you out, but also the restaurant down the street.

When the man saw you, you waved for him to come in and after a few moments of talking to his companions, the three of them walked in. They all looked pretty nervous, but you walked up to them smiling.

“What can I get for you boys?” They looked around at all the goods in the bakery, seeming to be scared to take another step closer the all the forbidden food. Before any of you could say anything, however, the bell on the door chimed and both the men and the polar bear froze at the voice that followed.

“What do you three think you are doing in a bakery? The bread is contaminating us already.” You knew that voice. It was deeper, huskier, but you knew it. It was the same irritating aloofness that had kept you from fully enjoying your destiny. It was a voice that had promised to return, but you had given up hope that he would come back. You turned around getting a good look at the man that your first love had become. He was just as handsome as you thought he would be in your day dreams. He was tall, much taller than you and he had grown facial hair. The spots that he had on his skin had disappeared, though he had never told you what those were from. The only thing that had absolutely not changed were his eyes. They were just as sharp and piercing as before. You had apparently caught his eyes before he could continue to rant at the men behind you. He glared at you, however after a moment his eyes widened.

“You!” He looked shocked as he spoke, you guessed he had recognized you. So that means he hadn’t come to this island to find you, or he wouldn’t be so surprised to see you in the only bakery on the island. You felt irritation and anger rise within you. You reached over to the nearest display case and grabbed a loaf of bread. Walking up to him, you shoved as much of the loaf into his opened mouth as you could.

“Here’s that bread you never came back for you ass!” You turned to look at the men, and polar bear, behind you smiling as the man behind you struggled with his mouthful of bread.

“Since I feel sorry for you having to put up with this useless ass, you guys can have anything in this shop, no charge. Also you should throw him in the sea and sail away.” They just nodded quietly, now scared of you and your reaction to the man behind you. You walked behind the counter and watched as the man finally managed to get the bread out of his mouth, having to swallow a large portion of it. He glared at you as you rested your chin on your hand and matched his glare.

“Well, since you guys obviously need to get reaquainted, me, Penguin and Bepo will just meet you on the ship Captain.” The man in the green hat started making his way to the door, not so subtly stuffing his jumpsuit with goodies. The other two followed him, doing the same. Before they managed to escape, their captain spoke up.

“Shachi, go tell Jean that we are going to stay docked for a few days. I have business with Miss Baker here.”
